Fibromyalgia has been recognized by the World Health Organization since 1992.
The objective of this day is to raise awareness among governments, institutions, and the media of the plight of people afflicted with these orphan conditions for which there is no treatment or care and remain incurable with current knowledge and resources. This event is held in 29 countries.
History
Born in Great Britain on May 12, 1820, Florence Nightingale worked as a nurse when she contracted a severe form of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia around the age of 35. She spent most of the last 50 years of her life bedridden. Despite her illness, Florence Nightingale inspired the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and she also founded one of the first nursing schools. She is a symbol of resistance and fight against illness. This is why this symbolic date of May 12 was chosen.
United, stronger!
Our association has joined forces with other fibromyalgia associations in Quebec and the SQF (Société Québécoise de la fibromyalgie) to highlight International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. Organized walks will take place all across Quebec. Increasing visibility was one of our objectives, but we also wanted to awaken a sense of kinship between the associations by working on a common goal. This day presents an opportunity to invite your family and friends to show their support. It’s also a chance for them to learn more about this condition. Additionally, each association will offer virtual conferences. Check out the SQF website: www.fibromyalgiaday.ca for the schedule of events for this wonderful week, which will take place between May 9, 2022, and May 15, 2022.
Laval Walk for Fibromyalgia
The unifying event of International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day will be a series of walks to raise public awareness about fibromyalgia.
We’re counting on your participation to make this event a success by collectively covering the 1500 kilometres we’ve set as our provincial goal. Join us at Park des Prairies in Laval-des-Rapides to walk together. If you can’t join us, you can walk individually during the week of May 9 to May 15, 2022, and let us know the number of steps or kilometres you’ve walked.
Céline Bernier, Kinesiologist B.Sc., will lead the way. Stretching, smiles, and fun await!
Virtual Conference
Thursday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m.
Walking and Fibromyalgia, a Winning Combination
Gabriel Harrison, a kinesiologist at NeuroMotrix will help us gear up for the walk with a motivational talk on the benefits of walking. He will cover a range of topics aimed at helping people with fibromyalgia to effectively manage their energy during exercise, and better listen to their signals and perception. You can also expect valuable tips on how to walk more efficiently. Fair warning: this conference may just inspire you to move more.
